Diet, exercise top Filipinos’ health-related online searches in 2013

Client News - Jan 3, 2014

Manila, Philippines, January 03, 2014) — Top health and lifestyle searches by Filipinos on google.com.ph in 2013 reflect strong interest in different dietary and physical activities to achieve the ideal weight and figure. “Garcinia cambogia,” a fruit that gained buzz for its reported weight loss properties, led last year’s health-related searches. At second spot is “BMI (body mass index) calculator,” a tool to measure body fat according to one’s height and weight.

Four more diet-related terms make it to the list. Typing in “diet meal plan,” the 3rd most searched term on the list, displays a variety of popular methods such as seven-day weight loss diet meal plans and low carb diet meal plan. General Motor Corporation’s “GM diet”, which placed 6th on the list, is one of the seven-day diet plans that claims a reduction of 10 to 17 lbs. in a week. The dietary supplement “whey protein” also garnered significant traffic at number 5.

“Intermittent fasting,” which diverts from the normal eating pattern, ranked 9th. This is when eating is scheduled only at a certain period/s of the day or week, prompting the body to burn stored fats when in fasting mode.

The rest of the terms on the list are fitness activities “zumba” and “yoga,” which became popular last year with the upswing of studios and classes offering one or both. Other than studios, “Bikram yoga” is one of the most common related search queries on yoga. The abdominal exercise “plank” and the high-intensity “Insanity Workout” complete the list.

The health and lifestyle list was released by Google Philippines as part of its 2013 year-end Zeitgeist, a collection of the most searched terms on the search engine throughout the year.
