Where Goodwill Translates to Good Business

The idea of companies giving back to communities isn’t new. But while first iterations of corporate social responsibility (CSR) was anchored on handing out donations, most companies today recognize that their efforts are far more effective if they leverage on their core capabilities to make a difference.

To illustrate how CSR is evolving is LBC—known as the country’s largest, Filipino-owned market leader in payments, remittance, courier products, mail, parcels, and cargo logistics.

With a tagline that touts how they ‘want to move it,’ their efforts also extends to moving not just lives and businesses but communities as well. So much of what LBC tries to do by way of CSR is based on their size, scale and business model to create a deeper impact on bigger social issues.

“As companies look to influence change, LBC has been looking towards more collaborative partnerships with the government and non-government organizations, anchored on our core capabilities as a business,” explains Christine L. Wuthrich, Executive Director of  LBC Foundation.

In recent years, LBC Foundation, the company’s philanthropic arm, has focused their efforts on youth and community development, education, environment and disaster relief. The goal is to spur positive change in the lives of Filipinos—an objective that is feasible primarily because of the brand’s network. To date, LBC Express has 4,400 branches, partners and agents in 30 countries.

Drawing on both their internal and customer network, LBC recently conducted a book donation drive to fulfill Library Renewal Partnership’s mission to build public libraries around the country.

Move It Forward was a recent campaign that lent the brand’s shipping and logistics services to various NGO partners as a way to support their individual developmental programs.

Drop-off Kick-off, which leverages on LBC’s breadth in shipping and distribution, supports youth development via athletics by collecting and distributing donated sports gear and equipment.

For community development, the brand has partnered with Gawad Kalinga to create homes in provinces that were devastated by typhoons, specifically in Capiz, Compostela Valley and Matag-ob, Leyte.

For youth development, they continue to focus on creating programs that assist kids to overcome post-Yolanda post-traumatic stress disorder through Field of Hope, a program designed to develop self-empowerment, building leadership skills and promoting active and healthy lifestyles within a safe environment. Similarly LBC has sponsored the education of over 150 children with World Vision.

The initiatives do not end with these. Because to the folks at LBC, the question is not why they have to help but what else they can do. Far be it for businesses to claim that CSR is part of the organization’s core strategy for growth, in the case of LBC, it’s authentic.

“On a broader scale, LBC is able to play a role in community resilience and nation building. Internally, we are able to engage our employees and give them a role as a lasting force for change in society. On a more practical, business-sense, we create a huge impact on the very people who have allowed our business grow through the years,” Christine L. Wuthrich, Executive Director of  LBC Foundation, asserts.

Businesses are central to ensuring that values and compassion are embedded within a company’s culture—and that’s what LBC continues to strive for.
